You know as a company we are growing fast. We’ve always been very careful to set a pace that wouldn’t compromise service and not to toot our horn too loudly—the feedback we get from you proves we’ve done an exceptional job. Once again, we are poised to take a quantum leap with several high-profile partners—which by the by is the reason we’ve been quiet lately. This was definitely an all hands on deck effort, but let your heart not be troubled, the level of service will remain exceptional.

Our message to our new members will—in part, be “you are in excellent company.”

And how’s this for a for instance? One of our members, we’ll call him Jack, was severely bitten. Yes, he is entirely smitten. Now Jack, at a loss on his own, was nevertheless determined to impress. Jack called his concierge who was delighted to arrange their unforgettable 1st date, and the rest is, as they say—history. Jack’s concierge was with him from the start; from planning the 1st date, the Valentine’s Day celebration, their anniversaries, birthdays—the all important proposal and now the wedding. And was it all done with panache? Of course. Was it unique? A memory she’ll cherish? We think so. And were they both delighted? As you know, one of our guiding principles is discretion. That said we’ve been authorized by the happy couple to say yes, they were completely delighted.

Danko’s Gift to San Fran

Remedy for the truly jaded palate. Restaurant Gary Danko at 800 North Point at Hyde Street in San Francisco is a palliative for the jaded palate. We know this to be true; our companion for dinner—a colorful sort of huge Texan, whose name is being withheld for…really good reasons, had a very jaded palate. A tough guy to impress; you know, a real foodies foodie.

Can he cook, or can he cook? Chef Gary Danko is a master yielding his gift without flourish. No stuffiness here, just excellent service and euphoric fare—simply beyond yummy. With five five-star ratings in the last six years, consistency is assured. The menu is contemporary and sophisticated as well as liberal. A regular at Danko’s recommended the Crostini glazed oysters with Osetra caviar, followed by stuffed quail and foie gras with a Domaine Laroche Les Clos 1999. The presentation was beautiful. The cheese selection is touted as famous, but we opted to share the black mission figs with goat cheese mousse, and coffee. The meal surpassed expectations as it was, in the words of our epicurean friend from Texas, larrupin good. Colorful fellow, huh?

If you’re going to San Francisco, do go to Restaurant Gary Danko. You’ll have to call well in advance for reservations, or take a chance on getting seated at the first come first served bar; instead of at one of the perfectly spaced tables. The dining room is an integral part of the experience. From lighting to table setting, to the service, and without even a hint of the ‘please eat and move on’ nuances we sometimes detect at fine eateries, we loved Dankos.

Desperately Seeking…

Domaine de la Vougeraie: 2001 Vougeot Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot is, in the estimation of grape nuts every where “what a burgundy can be.” Monks started making wine on this five and a half acre triangular vineyard 900 years ago. Acquired in 1964 by the Boissett family, this tiny vineyard, surrounded by noble reds like Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, and Les Amoureuses, is like “a diamond set in the center of rubies.” First blessed by the monks of Cîteaux in 1110, the blessing apparently endures.

The Vougeraie Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot 2001 presents an exceptional bouquet, with fruit and spice nut excellently fused and balanced by a touch of acidity. Marvelous sweet weight, the complex structure facilitates aging, but not infinitely, lingering legendary finish with the thinnest possible bite. Rare. We think what he’s saying is—buy it. If you buy it, decanter it, and when you decanter it, drink it. We have evidence to support this supposition? All we received was the empty bottle.

Memories in a box. An occasional helter skelter romp through the box works for some folks. Then there are those souls who like their memories cataloged, captioned, and neatly but artfully displayed in what are generally referred to as scrap books—the characterization seems wrong, but we digress. There are resources out there for these folks—design books, lessons and a variety of receptacles for your treasures. Not a bad idea if one considers the amount of finger tip skin lost to paste and glue in a slap dash effort.
